Color Management 101

1. Color Management 101, or "Why don't my prints look like what's on my monitor?"

Have you ever been disappointed when you had a photo that looked great on your computer screen, but not in print? Was the print dull and lifeless? Or too dark? Or too light? Or too yellow or blue or green or red?

This month I'd like to share some insights on how color management can ease these frustrations. Whether you are an amateur just using photoshop to touch up your vacation snapshots or a pro who wants to work more efficiently, this presentation will help!

You'll learn:

  • Why prints look different from the image on your monitor.
  • How color profiles can ensure that both monitor and printer produce the most accurate image possible.
  • The benefits of using color profiles for color management.
  • How to create color profiles for your monitor, or obtain them for your printer and paper.
  • How you can “soft proof”, or simulate printer output on your screen to see how the finished print will look. (This even works for online photo labs!)

2. Sharing and critique

Whether you're a member or a visitor, bring something to share. Find out what others see in your work, what people like best, and how you can improve. If you bring prints, print 'em big -- 8x10 is OK but 13x19 is better! -- so everyone can see! If you'd rather share electronic images, you can do that too. We'll have a projector and laptop at the meeting so you can show 'em off big and bright. (See Tips for Sharing and Critique.)

See you all on the 18th!

About the Club

The Photo Club at New York's LGBT Center offers a supportive environment for photographers at all levels to share their work, learn from others and gain the inspiration and skills necessary to improve their artistic expression.

The Club meets at the LGBT Center at 208 West 13th Street (between 7th and 8th) on the third Thursday of every month from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Activities at monthly meetings include presentations by guest speakers, technical and artistic discussions, sharing and critique of portfolios and individual images, and announcements of shows, classes and events of interest to NYC-based photographers. Activities outside of the regular Club meetings have included member-led gallery visits, workshops and one-on-one mentoring.

Club membership is $25 annually; Admission at meetings is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. First time visitors are always welcome and always free.
