Over the years, he has expressed his creativity through different media such as film, video, and computer graphics. Photography is his new endeavor and this is his second exhibit with the NYC Photo Club. Alan Barnett Alan Barnett grew up in Union, New Jersey. The son of a math teacher and an art director, he became an art director himself and worked for publishers designing books and marketing materials. In 1994, he left to start his own graphic design firm in New York City. Alan soon discovered that his love of fine art photography was a perfect complement to his skills as an art director. He enrolled in classes at the International Center of Photography and studied under H. Eugene Foster, Harvey Stein, and Joel Meyerowitz. Alan is currently working on a long-term project on what it means to be a firefighter. Exhibited in: 2010 Rogelio Bello Rogelio Bello, originally from the Philippines, is a nurse informaticist, an amateur photographer, a yogi... Exhibited in: 2010 Terry Beverly Terry Beverly is a documentary photographer based in Brooklyn, NY. She has an extensive background in photojournalism. Her work has appeared at The 2009 New York Photo Festival 2009, The De La Vega Street Art Festival, and Sopi Photography's Art Space Gallery Opening (2009). She has worked with the DUMBO Arts Center (DAC), FIERCE NYC, and The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI). Exhibited in: 2010 Lester Blum Drawing upon his artistic vision for design, balance, and color, Lester Blum began exploring photography six years ago. Primarily self taught, his work encompasses a diversity of subjects. He has participated in five annual group shows at the Center in New York; 2007 had two one man exhibits in the Gallery Room at the OW Lounge; 2008, two images were exhibited in the Salmagundi Club's Annual Juried Exhibition; in 2009 work was accepted for exhibition at the Salmagundi Club again. Lester continues to refine his photography with new concepts and techniques for capturing his wide range of subjects. Bob Brins Life Long New Yorker, born in Manhattan, 1946. Primary education in Roman Catholic schools, NYU Business Degree. Currently work in Real Estate, crunching numbers, solving problems..... For Photography, self taught. During the 60's and 70's was regularly in attendence at the Witkin Gallery, NYC's first full time photograply gallery. Also benefited from NYC's many Museums. (Attended Arbus's FIRST solo show, at MOMA.) Now on line galleries, sharing sites.... Influences are mostly traditional photographers, such as Weston, Strand, Adams, Cunningham and White. Newer works by Jan Groover have had effect as well. Mapplethorp and Sherman are greatly admired...... In a relationship for 40 years. Loved by our cats, Matt Chapin Matt Chapin was raised in Austin, Texas and has enjoyed photography all his life. A resident of New York City for 10 years, Matt enjoys documenting his travels around the city and the world. John Dunwoody New York City's irresistible charm captured John's heart and imagination as a child when he would frequent the city with his parents. And eight years ago, after graduating with his BA in English and Studio Art from Davidson College in North Carolina, Gotham became his home. John started as a sculptor and a painter, and had his first NYC show of his paintings during the Spring of 2004. His love for the creative process has remained steadfast and only the mediums he uses seem to vary. He has always maintained his freelance career as a Graphic Designer, with a brief pause while pursuing his MA in Art and Art Education at Columbia University and teaching Photography and Studio Art. John recently began on another life-long goal this past Fall, and started work on his MFA at the School of Visual Arts' Photography, Video and Related Media Program. His work has been part of a number of group and solo shows over the years. John currently resides on the Southern most tip of Manhattan with his two Whippets. Exhibited in: 2008 Scott Dwyer Scott Dwyer has pursued photography as a hobby over the last 20 years. Formal classes have included those offered through his primary and secondary school curriculum as well as the School of Visual Arts' continuing education program. Scott has been a resident of New York City for the last 11 years, the East Village for seven, since graduating from NYU's Stern School of Business in 2001. He is currently a relationship manager with Cohen & Steers Capital Management, Inc. Scott thanks his family, friends, teachers and Rick Masters for their constant inspiration and support. This is his third show with the Club. Exhibited in: 2008 Mark Edward Chesnut Mark Edward Chesnut's work has been featured in a variety of media, including Blue Magazine and DNA (Australia); Bruno Gmünder, Du & Ich and Mate (Germany); HX, Instinct, Next, Playgirl and Travel Weekly (United States). A brand-new, 18-month calendar of Mark's work, called California Dreaming, is being published by 10 Percent for 2009 and is available starting in June 2008. More of his work is on view at www.MarkEdwardStudio.com. Laird Mark Ehlert Laird was born and raised in central Wisconsin, but has lived in Jersey City for the past 25 years. Laird says that, "While I largely failed to find a self-supporting career in art & design, I have continued to create in my spare time, as so many artists do. I have produced an extensive amount of graphic design projects, mostly for not-for-profit groups, and have been a constant photographer over the years- I almost always have a camera with me. Twenty years ago I started my own greeting card company, Maid In The Shade. Many of the cards incorporate my own photographs." Laird is currently working on a book of informal portraits- strangers who cross his path only once in a lifetime. Education: BS in Elementary Art Education from the University of Wisconsin; BFA in Advertising Design from Syracuse University. Exhibited in: 2009 Roger Generazzo Roger was born in Nyack, NY. He lives and works in New York City. He graduated with a BA from George Washington University, Washington, DC, and is currently earning an MFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, studying with Charles Traub and Collier Schorr. His work has been exhibited at the Center for Fine Art Photography, Fort Collins, CO, Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, NY, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Novato, CA, and Brush Art Gallery, Lowell, MA. Tom Giebel Tom Giebel's photographs have appeared in many online publications including The New York Times, New York Magazine, New York Observer, and others. He has exhibited work in several group shows, including Look See: Reflection at the Brooklyn Artists Gym, As We See It at The Center, and Click! A Crowd-curated Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. A Wisconsin native, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin—Madison in 1988 and moved to New York city. He currently resides in Brooklyn, where he finds ample photographic inspiration. Brian Gorman As a child in the 1950s, I learned the power of the still image. In 1998, I began to explore my growing passion for photography. Technical training at The New School was followed by extensive coursework in portraiture and personal projects at The International Center of Photography. My photography has been influenced by such artists as Imogen Cunningham, William Gedney, George Platt Lynes, and John Coplans. Daniel Handal Born in Honduras in 1970, Daniel Handal has lived in the United States since 1989. Graduated in 1994 with an Applied Sciences Engineering Degree from Rutgers University. Currently he is Principal and Creative Director for Artifact Studios in New York City where he supports his photography projects by designing websites for online retailers. James M Hanlon James Hanlon is a native New Yorker living where water meets sand along the shoreline of New York Harbor. He is a proud graduate of Pratt Institute. In 2008 he was a contributing photographer to "The Brooklyn Museum 2008 Spring Video" - a promotional piece by videographer Matt Wolf. In 2009 his work "Home Alone" was included in the "HUGEunHUGE" exhibition in the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center. Several of his pieces will be seen in group exhibitions during the summer of 2010 starting with the group show "ART MIX-UP" at Martini Red on Staten Island. Lauderdale, Southern Calif, Lake Tahoe and then returned to sanity in Manhattan. Work experiences include: lifeguarding to waitressing to parking valet to croupier to non-profit lobbyist to sales representative in good ol' corporate America. Allison is an amateur photographer primarily self-taught and has studied photography at the Pratt Institute. This is her second show with the Center Photo Club. She was nominated for "Best Emerging Artist" at GLAAD's OUTAuction NYC 2008 but didn't win. Particular photographic interests include ocean landscapes, architecture, civil rights activism and street scenes. Melissa Levow A native New Yorker, with a lifelong interest in taking pictures, Melissa Levow has been a member of the NYC Photo Club for three years. During that time, she has expanded her knowledge of photography from going to the club's monthly meetings, talking with her colleagues and attending workshops, for all of which she is very thankful. Louis Lisi I am a retired widower who was married 47 years and raised 5 children. Have been living alone in a senior apartment complex for the past 6 years. 81 years old. Studied Commercial Photography at the New York High School of Industrial Arts for 3 years. Worked in darkrooms of photographers of graduating classes of various schools, catalog illustrators, and photo finishers. Made wedding albums in black and white with a 4x5 Crown Graphic but got married and got out of the field and photographed mostly my own family as a hobby. Exhibited in: 2008 Elio Lopez Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Elio has been drawn by the world of art since his teens. Working in the travel industry for the past 20 years has enabled him to experience the rich diversity of global cultures and started his interest in photography. After moving to New York City he has continued his development as a photographer, studying at Pratt Institute and the International Center of Photography. Exhibited in: 2010 Frank Louis Beauty, fashion and fine art photographer in NYC. Featured in numerous magazines, including; Instinct, reFRESH, HX, and soon to be featured in DNA magazine. Even as a child, I appreciated the world of film, amazed by how one could capture pure emotion in a single frame. At thirteen, I began discovering a new world as I lifted up my first camera. It was amazing knowing that this little magical box could show people my world. Coming out at fifteen, my eyes and lens became open to new views as I began to witness the ugly and beautiful sides of life. Exhibited in: 2010 Steven Maloff Steven Maloff was born in Los Angeles, and California is the subject of his work. Steven also studied photography at the International Center of Photography and holds a Master's degree in journalism from New York University. He has written many articles about popular culture and is a regular contributor to Interview, Women's Wear Daily, and Mademoiselle. He lives in Tribeca. Charles Marinaro BIOGRAPHY OF CHARLES MARINARO Coming of age in the 60’s, I was influenced by the fashion photography of the times, beginning my career as an assistant to William Silano. My fashion photography of the t-shirt revolution led to theatrical portraiture and stage production stills, with clients such as The Hudson Guild Theatre, and Theater for the New City. Published in: The New York Times, The New York Post, The Daily News, Playbill, and too many to count theatrical posters. Exhibitions: The MacIntyre Building Art Expo, The Pittsburgh International Salon of Photographic Art, The Cincinnati Museum of Art. My association with the Bronxchester Boxing Club influenced my theme – “Athletes.” Exhibited in: 2010 Fern Wood Mitchell Fern Wood...aka Mitch, was born in California but grew up all across the country, and finally settled in New York in 1962. Mitch is a graduate of the New York School of Interior Design, where he continues to give painting demonstrations. Until recently, Mitch enjoyed a career as a designer of printed fabrics and wallpaper for most of the up-scale fabric companies in New York and around the country. Exhibited in: 2009 Ralph Modica A graduate of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Studies in photography, film and video. Further studies and work at International Center of Photography, NYC. Work has been published in "Self-Exposure" 2005 and other various magazines. Exhibited in: 2008 Frank Mullaney Frank Mullaney is a photographer and designer living in the East Village of Manhattan. He has studied photography at the International Center of Photography and The Cooper Union with, among others, Amy Arbus, Billy Cunningham and Barry Stone. His work has been exhibited at galleries in Livingston Manor, NY; Narrowsburg, NY; Provincetown; Los Angeles and New York City. His photographs have also been included in group shows at The California Museum of Photography and ICP in New York. He will have a solo show, "REAL/UNREAL" at the CAS Arts Center, located in the Catskills, in the 2011 season. This is his fourth show with the NYC Photo Club at the Center. Robert Murphy A native of Oxford, Mississippi, I grew up in the South and Midwest but became a New Yorker in 1988. I photographed furniture for catalogs for several years before turning to careers in financial news, law, and law enforcement. I travel in Latin America whenever possible, especially Mexico and, over the last year, Colombia. Exhibited in: 2009 Judith Oppenheimer Judith Oppenheimer is a self-taught photographer who was compelled to start shooting by the horrors of Hurricane Katrina. With her family's history of escaping Nazi Germany, the feared “it can happen here” struck an internal chord that literally sought visceral relief. She has been on a visual journey ever since. Her primary focus is candid black and white. Her work has been both licensed and sold. This is her fourth group show. Exhibited in: 2009 Ernest Ortiz A native Texan, Ernest received a B.A. in Radio, Television, Film from the University of Texas at Austin. Having worked on the corporate side of the radio industry for over a decade in Austin then New York, Ernest felt the need to get back to his artistic roots. To that end, he will receive an A.A.S. in Commercial Photography from LaGuardia Community College this Summer. Additionally, Ernest has taken courses in photography at the Pratt Institute, The University of Texas at Austin and various workshops. This is Ernest's second year to exhibit at the Center's annual show. Recent accomplishments include placing 2nd in the First Annual NYC Photo Marathon (www.nycphotomarathon.org) and being a Finalist in the pARTy competition at Posh Bar. An active member of the Advertising Photographers of America's New York branch, Ernest sits on the events committee and is currently working on an educational outreach initiative to bridge the gap from student to working professional. Exhibited in: 2008 Robert Owen Born in Manhattan, raised on Long Island, Robert Owen has studied & worked in the United States and abroad; he now teaches in northwest Suffolk County, New York. This is his sixth N.Y.C. Photography Club show at the Center. Pedro Pena Pedro Pena is a graduate of Hunter College where he Majored in Art History. His love for photography began 4 ago years when he began experimenting with a Kodak Easy Share. Since then, he has moved on to more sophisticated cameras and it shows in his work. He is self-taught and his inspiration comes from reading about art and other photographers. He is very much influenced by Italian Renaissance Art and the use of Chiaroscuro. His biggest influece is Caspar David Friedrich, the German Romantic Painter. Pedro's Photographs have a unique sense of the Romantic and Mysterious with dramatic shadows and silhouttes. He loves nature, architecture and of course New York City, which he has photographed hundreds of times. This is Mr. Pena's second group showing and he has had his pictures published. He plans to continue taking photographs and hopes one day to be a Fine Arts Photographer. Exhibited in: 2008 R E G I S E C O In 1993, having successfully completed my studies in communications and media at the University of Lima I took an intensive course in photography. I then began to work as a fashion photographer, I have won awards and prizes in several Peruvian fashion photography contests. I have developed catalogs, exhibitions, portfolios, fashion editions and work extensively with, designers and non conventional models in Peru, fashion context. I have been influenced by movies, modern dance, and T.V. music videos. My art is essentially concerned with color. I work primarily with naturally lighting effects, film processing and printing techniques. In the late 90s, I began working more on portraits for musicians, writers, actors, weddings and advertising photography. I came to New York in 1999 and began producing party and social portraits. I introduce the use of computer design and touch-up techniques, continuing my overall interest in color. In 2005 I won the annual "Brassai Award", Photography contest organized by Encounter with the Arts (ECARTE) in Peru. June 2006 I won 1st and 2nd place "Estampas de Vida", international art competition organized by Hispanics Aids of Forum - New York, juried contest featuring works of Latino Visual artist, celebrating community health and self-respect.I am currently working on personal projects concerning portraits of people. Exhibited in: 2008 Steven Rosen Steven Rosen is an award-winning portrait, travel, theater, and event photographer. His work has been featured in a variety of media, including travel and photography books, magazines, newspapers, annual reports, web sites, calendars and on the Kodak Jumbotron in Times Square. He is available for individual, couple, and family portraits, as well as to cover events, weddings, and performances. His extensive library of images is available for fine art prints or to license. David Sellers Born and raised in Florida, David has lived in New York since 1982. Formerly an actor and theatre administrator, he decided to change careers in 1991, returned to graduate school and became a law librarian. He currently works at a large private law firm in midtown Manhattan. David is an amateur photographer, and has studied photography at Pratt Institute and ICP. Several of his NYC landscapes have been published by New York Magazine. Exhibited in: 2008 Rick Shupper New Jersey-born and raised. Ronald Spainhour Ronald Spainhour moved to New York City the summer of 1968 when folk music reigned in the Village and flower children stood in line at the Fillmore East (the “Church of Rock and Roll”) for tickets to concerts by The Doors, the Grateful Dead, Richie Havens, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker and many others. His photos have been published in Time Out New York, the online Schmap New York Guide and shown at the Greenwich Arts Council’s Art to the Avenue exhibit in Greenwich, Connecticut and last year’s “As We See It” exhibit. Gary Strickland Born and raised in the mangrove forests of rural Florida, Gary Strickland has a strong connection with the natural world, as shown by his favorite subjects: landscapes, seascapes, and all living things, especially botanical. He began photography as a teen in the USN and it has been a lifelong passion. He retired from a 1st career as a Microbiologist, then became a GJG (graduate jeweler/gemologist)at the GIA. He creates handmade commissioned fine jewelry, and also sells his watercolors. One of his black and white photos recently won an award in the Jackson Hts. Art Club's annual exhibition. Exhibited in: 2009 Masataka Suemitsu Masataka Suemitsu was born in Beppu, a city in southern Japan. After two years of studying medicine, he could not resist his passion for art. He eventually moved to New York City in 1993 to study Men's and Women's fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). As a visually oriented person, Masataka has always been fascinated with photography and graphic art, and returned to study photography at FIT. Exhibited in: 2009 don ventura Primarily a sculptor Don Ventura is a native New Yorker. He developed an interest in photography about 15 years ago at which time he took several courses at ICP. He first exhibited his photography at the Salmagundi Club, here in New York, and has exhibited there several times since. He became a member in 2007. He is also a Life Member at the Art Students' League. Exhibited in: 2010 Jesus Villegas Primarily self-taught, Jesus has been taking pictures for 20 years. To mark this major turning point, he has decided to finally share his work with the public at large. This is his first group showing. He is a great fan of candid shots of random strangers engaged in the intricacies of everyday life. His collection of photos has grown as his camera has guided him to different corners of the world. He recently discovered two favorite subjects: places of worship and puddles. Both offer serenity in an otherwise chaotic environment: one a place to reflect on whatever is on your mind and the other, the opportunity to see the world from a different angle. Exhibited in: 2008 Jim Wroten Jim, a native of Mississipi, has also lived in Texas, New York and North Carolina. He has returned to New York City and finds it an ideal place for both retirement and photography. An amateur photographer since youth, he converted to digital over ten years ago. His long career as computer software developer merges well with his hobby of digital photography. Exhibited in: 2010 Daniel Yoffee A life long New Yorker Daniel Yoffee’s interest in photography began as a young teenager capturing Kodak moments with family, friends and pets. He has taken photography classes in high school, college, continuing education and currently at ICP. He has previously participated in group exhibits at St. Thomas Aquinas College, The Loft, Westchester, NY, The Pearl River, NY Library, The Best Little Frame Shop in Mahwah, NJ and the Teaneck Creek Conservancy in Teaneck, NJ.
